Our history: from the salt pans to the Pennypit

Monks were making salt in pans on the Prestonpans shore by 1198, and the town takes its name from them. Preston Athletic’s history starts in 1945, when the club was founded to play for the town.

The crest

The Cross at the heart of the crest

At the centre of our crest is Preston Market Cross, built in 1617. Historic Environment Scotland calls it “the only surviving monument of its type on its original site”.

Proclamations were read to the town from its upper platform. That’s why our club news is called From the Cross. On the crest, 19 and 45 sit either side of the cross: the year the club was founded.
